Dr. Block’s research focuses on how large pelagic fishes utilize the open ocean environment. She investigates the physiology of how large fish utilize endothermy, cardiac physiology and swimming performance. She utilizes biologging and telemetry to study tunas, sharks and billfish in the open ocean. She established the Tuna Research and Conservation Center at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Stanford University. Dr. Block leads two programs that have tagged thousands of animals to examine the ecological physiology, habitat utilization and oceanic migrations:Tag A Giant in the Atlantic, and Tagging of Pacific Pelagics in the Pacific Ocean.
