Expertise Profile

Dr. Bates is the Associate Director of Research and Senior Scientist at BIOS, and an Adjunct Full Professor at the University of Delaware. His research includes ocean biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen and dissolved organic matter; physical and biological processes influencing ocean-atmosphere gas exchange of CO2; coupling between biogeochemical processes and climate variability; studies on ocean acidification, and influence of coral reefs and calcifying organisms on carbon cycling and air-sea CO2 exchange, ad response to ocean acidification. He is presently a member of of the US Carbon Cycle Scientific Steering Group (CCSSG) and other national/international committees.
